Day 1
Today's class was one of the most stimulating classes I've had in a long time. Everyone had really interesting ideas that changed the way I thought of the readings. Something I hadn't thought about until class was how similar Fumes is to Bran in Game of Thrones. Both gain immense knowledge after enduring an accident which makes them key players in understanding what has happened or how to communicate with others. Yet, they both lose their identity to their new knowledge. They also can't really think or feel for themselves. At first, I thought this was a tragic thing. However, someone (I think Erik) brought up how this lifestyle doesn't seem to bother Fumes in the same way that Bran doesn't seem bothered by the sacrifices he gave to become the Three -Eye-Raven. I definitely left class with a better understanding of these materials and an idea of how to look at the future readings.
I'm really glad Emily came to do the seminar with us on identity. I think it was important for us to re-evaluate our emotions towards our own identities and see where other people stand. That experience put me in a better place to open up later on in the month as well as help me learn about my peer and professors. Doing this workshop on the first day "broke a lot of ice"(as we say in orientation staff) which will be helpful going forward.
